Here we see the typical Colli Fiorentini countryside, with its cypress-lined lanes and rolling hills.

Poppiano Castle was one of the fortresses that offered front line protection for Florence. Unlike many of similar castles and estates, Poppiano was never broken up and sold in recent times; it is still owned by Count Guicciardini, who oversees the wine and olive oil production that takes place inside Poppiano Castle.

The torre grande, or big tower, is on the left in the picture. The following photos were taken either from the top of the tower or from inside the tower, which is entirely devoted to the production and aging of Vin Santo, a dessert wine made from mat-dried Malvasia grapes. The Poppiano Castle style is a drier style, made in the traditional way. The current vintage that you can buy in the castle in 2008 is 1999.
